Summer humidity can limit our hairstyling options, so we’re already thinking about all of the looks we’re going to experiment with come fall. Feeling the same way? Grab your styling tools and some dry shampoo, because we’re sharing the trendiest fall hairstyles for 2023.

Trending Fall Hairstyles 2023

The Power Pony

“Ponytails have definitely started to pick up as we close out summer and head into fall,” says celebrity hairstylist and Matrix artistic director Nick Stenson. The “high power pony,” as Stenson calls it, takes inspiration from a certain doll that could be spotted in theaters all over this summer. Lock your pony in place and add shine using the Matrix Fixer Hairspray.

Mini Claw Clips

“A continuation of the claw clip trend, these smaller accessories are perfect for a low-maintenance, half-up, half-down look,” says Stenson.

The Slicked-Back Bun

“There seems to be no slowing down of the slicked-back, shiny, snatched bun look,” says Aviva Jansen Perea, celebrity hairstylist and founder of hair accessories line Day Rate Beauty. She suggests dressing up your basic bun with coquette-inspired ribbons and bows. “Satin [or] silk is fun for spring and summer and velvet leans more towards fall, but really, there are no rules.” You can also secure your bun with the oversize pins from Day Rate Beauty, which come in a variety of neutral shades as well as an on-trend bubblegum pink and a timeless gold

The ’90s Blowout

“The ’90s supermodel blowout is still going strong and I believe it will continue to be one of the leading trends as we head into the cooler months,” says Stenson. The tutorial below will help you master your blow-drying routine — for an extra boost of volume, we recommend prepping the hair with the Drybar Big Brew Instant Thickening Styling Treatment.

The Classic Bob

Stenson also predicts a return to a “less is more” approach when it comes to haircuts and styling, starting with the classic bob. “There are so many variations of the classic bob and it’s such an easy, chic way to have a styled look with minimal effort,” he explains. “For me, the effort is in the prep when it comes to any hairstyle or haircut. My must-have at-home products for maintaining healthy hair are the Matrix Food for Soft Hydrating Shampoo and Conditioner. Hair that has a proper moisture balance will give the best shine and luminosity.”

Loose Waves

The more tousled your waves, the better this season. For an effortless, lived-in vibe, we recommend misting damp strands with the Redken Beach Spray, a sea salt-free spray that gives instant volume and wave to any hair texture.

A Subtle Balayage

“My favorite hair color right now is a balayage look…one that enhances the natural features of your client and has a lit-from-within feeling,” says Stenson. “[We’re] moving away from the bold money pieces and into a more luxurious-feeling color that enhances your natural features.”

Cinnamon Cookie Butter Color

According to Jansen Perea, we’ll be seeing a lot more cinnamon cookie butter hair color, a warm, fall-ready shade created by celebrity colorist Matt Rez. “Cinnamon cookie butter is basically utilizing your base color (most often brunette), but adding tones of gold with hints of copper to make this multidimensional, innovative shade that I think is absolutely perfect for fall!”
