6 Beauty Trends That Will Be Big in 2024, According to Makeup Artists
December 19, 2023New year, new me? More like new year, new makeup routine. This year, some of the hottest makeup trends included the ethereal balletcore and mermaidcore makeup aesthetics, the resurgence of indie sleaze and ’90s style smudged liner and monochrome, foodie-inspired makeup looks like latte makeup. While you should expect a few of these to carry on into the new year, 2024 is making a strong case for fresh-faced makeup looks.
Keep reading for a round up of 2024’s most anticipated makeup trends, according to makeup artists Tisha Thompson, Nikki DeRoest and Jamie Greenberg.
Skincare-Infused Makeup
“In 2024, my prediction is that people will be looking for makeup products with dual benefits — AKA more skincare-infused skin tints, blushes, lip products, etc,” says Greenberg, celebrity makeup artist and founder of JamieMakeup. Think of hybrid products like the L’Oréal Paris True Match Nude Hyaluronic Tinted Serum, which provides coverage with a skin-loving, hyaluronic acid-infused formula, or the JamieMakeup The Bloss, which features peppermint oil and shea butter to heal dry, cracked lips while providing a colorful, glossy finish.
“Going into 2024, the health of your skin will remain a top priority,” adds DeRoest, celebrity makeup artist and founder of ciele. “I like to achieve this with dewy complexion looks and acne-safe formulas.” She recommends the ciele tint & PROTECT SPF 50+, which is formulated without pore-clogging ingredients and mineral-based SPF 50. It gives the skin a dewy, hydrated finish with minimal steps; note that the brand recommends layering it over your daily SPF for max sun protection.
Fresh-Faced Complexions
Following the theme of skincare-infused makeup, is lighter, fresh-faced makeup looks. “I think we will see more makeup-wearers swapping full-coverage foundations for lightweight and hydrating formulas,” says Thompson, pro makeup artist and LYS Beauty founder. She recommends the LYS Beauty Triple Fix Serum Foundation, a weightless serum foundation with light to medium coverage. If you’re looking for a drugstore pick, try the Maybelline New York Super Stay 24H Skin Tint + Vitamin C for sweatproof, your-skin-but-better coverage.
Glowy Cheeks
Good news: Highlighter is back — but not in the over-the-top and heavy-handed way it was in the 2010s. “The emergence of glowy cheeks with liquid blush and highlighter products is something we will see a lot more of in 2024,” says Thompson. Instead of powder highlighter, she recommends using the LYS Beauty Aim High Liquid Highlighter, which can be used over, underneath or mixed with your foundation. Mix it with liquid blush, like the Urban Decay New Hydromaniac Dewy Liquid Blush, for an easy, glowy cheek with just the right amount of color and shimmer.
Monochrome Makeup
You guessed it, the latte makeup and strawberry girl makeup looks that dominated 2023 are not going anywhere. “Monochromatic makeup will continue to dominate beauty trends in 2024,” says DeRoest. “Harmonizing your lip and cheek shade to create a cohesive and polished look is perfect for both daytime and evening.”
For something glossy, pair the ciele blush & PROTECT SPF 50+ with the YSL Beauty Rouge Volupté Candy Glaze Lip Gloss Stick. Our editors also love the Valentino Liquirosso 2 In 1 Lip & Blush Soft Matte Color, which can be used on the lips and cheeks for a seamless (and mega-easy) monochrome look.
Colorful Editorial Looks
“I think that fun, vibrant and creative editorial looks will be even more popular in 2024,” says Greenberg. “Colorful and bold eyeliner looks, lip art, multi-color blush looks and more will be making their way back into trends next year.” To pack the pigment, Greenberg recommends recreating these types of looks with a colorful, pigmented eyeliner, like the Urban Decay 24/7 Inks Easy Ergonomic Liquid Eyeliner Pen or the LimeCrime Venus Pigmented Liquid Eyeliners (which are her fave).
In 2024, expect to see chrome textures and chunky shimmers paired with these colorful, editorial-inspired makeup looks. The Urban Decay Moondust Glitter Eyeshadow Palette is great for a daytime-friendly, multi-dimensional shimmer, while the Danessa Myricks Lightwork V I Am Palette is our ultimate pick for creating bold and mesmerizing duochrome makeup looks.
Natural Lashes
“Going along with the more natural look, I think we’re going to see a transition away from eyelash extensions,” says Thompson. “I predict there will be a transition from falsies to brown and black mascara for more natural-looking lashes.” For a long, natural lash, try the cult-favorite L’Oréal Paris Telescopic Original Washable Mascara in Black Brown. For a natural lash that still packs volume, length and curl, Thompson recommends the LYS Lash Confidence Mascara.
