How to Pick the Right Foundation for Your Skin Type

As is the case with nearly every makeup product we own, the quest to find the perfect foundation for your skin type can leave you overwhelmed by options. There are just so many different formulas, textures and ingredients out there, and we know that choosing one isn’t plain and simple. To help you wade through the choices, we caught up with makeup artist Gabriel Almodovar for his advice on how to pick the best foundation for your skin type. Check out his expert advice, ahead:

Acne-Prone Skin

If acne is a major skin concern for you, Almodovar recommends a medium to full coverage foundation. When applying your foundation, use a “clean brush or a clean sponge every application applying the product in a stippling motion.”

Try: L’Oréal Infallible Pro-Matte 24 Hour Foundation or NYX Professional Makeup Total Control Drop Foundation

Aging Skin

Heavy product can settle into fine lines and wrinkles so opt for a light coverage liquid foundation or tinted moisturizer for younger-looking, luminous skin.

Try:Dermablend Flawless Creator mixed with your favorite moisturizer or IT Cosmetics Your Skin But Better CC+ Cream

Dry Skin

To quench your dry skin throughout the day, Almodovar recommends a light coverage, hydrating foundation. When applying your product, use your “fingers and press the product into the skin,” for longer-lasting coverage, Almodovar says.

Try: Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation or L’Oréal True Match Lumi Healthy Luminous Makeup

Oily Skin

To ditch the shine, choose a medium to full coverage foundation. When applying your product use a “sponge or brush because using your fingers can transfer the oil from your hands to your face,” Almodovar says.

Try: Urban Decay All Nighter Liquid Foundation or Maybelline Fit Me Shine-Free + Balance Stick Foundation

Combination Skin

If you have combination skin, you can choose whether you want to be more on the dewy side or more on the matte side. But a slightly matte foundation will keep the T-zone oiliness at bay, and you can always add a highlight to your cheeks for a slight glow. Your coverage and application tool is completely up to you, but try not to use your fingers on your oily areas as to not clog your pores.

Try: Yves Saint Laurent All Hours Foundation or Maybelline Fit Me! Matte & Poreless Foundation

Sensitive Skin

Sensitive skin likes to act up, so stay away from products that are too heavy and/or too fragranced. You want to keep any and all aggressors to a minimum, which is why mineral Foundations are always a good bet. Keep the coverage on the lighter side and always apply with a clean brush or sponge so you don't give your skin any reason to act up.

Try: L'Oréal Paris True Match Mineral Foundation or La Roche-Posay Matte Foundation for Sensitive Skin
