We love our go-to lipstick, but recently we’ve been tempted to switch things up and experiment with lip art. Painting on your lips is a true test of your makeup artist skills and is a cool addition to any look. We’ll admit, lip art designs can get complicated, but once you get the hang of it, they’re actually pretty easy (though time-consuming!) to DIY. To help give you some lip art ideas, we’ve rounded up some of our favorite tutorials, ahead. We dare you to try them all!

Go Galaxy

For the ultimate galaxy lips (like the look in this awesome tutorial!), we recommend getting out your darkest lipstick shades. We recommend NYX Professional Makeup Lip Lingerie XXL Matte Liquid Lipstick in Naughty Noir for a matte black base. Turn the dark shade into a cosmic galaxy effect by tapping on a metallic eyeshadow, like the Urban Decay 24/7 Shadow in Lucid, and dots of white liquid lipstick. If you’re feeling bold and artsy, feel free to add extra space effects, too, like a comet or tiny planet. The important thing is to keep it in a blue and purple color palette!

Mermaid Mouth

Grab a black liquid lipstick to get a look similar to this aquatic look, and apply it to the bottom half of your lips as a base. Then, fill in with a navy blue lippie — we like the NYX Professional Makeup Suede Matte Lipstick in Ace for its all-day wear and lightweight feel. To create the mermaid scales in this look, content creator Miss Jazmina patted eyeshadow over the top of a nail stencil. The addition of gemstones seals the aquatic deal!

Oil-Slick Drip

For a slick oil effect, look no further than this tutorial. To get a similar look at home, we recommend applying for an iridescent pink lip gloss, like the Maybelline New York Lifter Gloss in Petal, over your base. It’s the perfect to get the job done, because it plumps and hydrates while adding maximum shine.

Full Rainbow

Start gathering your brightest lipsticks! They’ll be essential in creating these ombre rainbow lips In this video, creator @themirrorbeauty uses NYX Professional Makeup Liquid Suede Cream Longwear Lipstick in Amethyst for a vibrant purple hue, with pops of pink, red, orange, yellow and green surrounding it.

Full-On Floral

Who doesn’t love flowers? To get this floral look, begin with a dark lippie base — Darby Smith chooses to mix a navy blue and black lipstick to get the perfect shade. With a tiny brush, go in with bright, floral shades, like white, pink, and a true red like the L’Oréal Paris Infallible Pro-Matte Liquid Lipstick in Red Affair. Continue to add flowers on your lips to your liking — red roses, yellow daisies and blue hyacinths are a striking combination.
