How a Makeup Artist Keeps Lipstick From Settling Into Fine Lines
October 06, 2021Perfect lipstick application can be tricky, especially if your lipstick tends to settle in fine lines and feather around the perimeter of your mouth. To stop your lipstick from bleeding, we consulted Beck Morgan, a Giorgio Armani Beauty makeup artist, on his top tips for a smooth, even lip look that lasts.
Why Does Lipstick Settle in Fine Lines?
“The primary reasons for lipstick feathering are dehydrated lips, and the fine lines or wrinkles around the lips,” says Morgan. “Dry lips can pull the creamy lipstick moisture and pigment with it as you talk, drink and eat, causing the formula to move and smudge around the mouth.” Before you apply your lipstick, hydrate your lips with a rich balm, such as the Kiehl’s Butterstick Lip Treatment. Be sure to wipe off any excess before you begin your lipstick application.
How to Stop Lipstick From Feathering and Bleeding in Fine Lines

STEP 1:
Beck recommends using a small amount of long-wearing concealer, such as the Giorgio Armani Beauty Power Fabric Concealer, as a base. “This concealer is incredible for this thanks to its natural matte finish and exceptional wearability,” he says. You can also try a dedicated primer, such as the Urban Decay Ultimate Ozone Multipurpose Primer Pencil. It glides on clear and contains moisturizing jojoba oil to nourish your lips before you swipe on lipstick.

STEP 2:
Choose the right lipstick formula. “Your best friend will be a long-wearing, satin finish lipstick,” says Beck. The Giorgio Armani Beauty Lip Power Longwear Satin Lipstick is one of our favorite richly pigmented satin formulas. The shades are vivid and comfortable enough to wear all day. We also love the L'Oréal Colour Riche Les Nus Intense Lipsticks, a range of creamy, saturated nudes infused with moisturizing oils.

STEP 3:
“When applying your lipstick, begin with an even coat of color, then use a tissue to blot any excess formula,” says Beck. “You can repeat this process once or twice more, until your desired level of opacity is achieved. Then, apply a final layer to the center of your lips for a flawless-looking lip that won’t feather or bleed.”
