Your Guide to Applying Magnetic Lashes
December 20, 2023If you’re looking to really take your eye makeup look to the next level, false eyelashes will do the trick. But one well-known downside to individual or strip lashes is that they can be a little difficult to apply if you haven’t fine-tuned the skill. Since wiping off sticky lash glue isn’t super fun (and a strip of lashes hanging off your eyelid isn’t an ideal scenario either), you may be on the hunt for alternative ways to get that fluttery, doe-eyed look. Enter: magnetic lashes.
They’re reusable, mess-free (no eyelash glue required) and look just as glam. Magnetic lashes can be a little tricky to apply for newbies, but with the right tips and tricks, they will become a mainstay in your makeup lineup. Keep scrolling for advice on how to apply them, info on how long they last and mascara recs if you’re not quite ready to give them a try.
What Are Magnetic Lashes?
Magnetic lashes are a type of false lash that adhere to your lashes with tiny magnets. “They’re easy to remove, and you can reuse them many times without having to clean any adhesive residue off,” says Jadene Munson, a makeup artist and an Ardell global brand ambassador.
According to celebrity makeup artist Leila VonSleichter, magnetic lashes may also help preserve your natural lashes. “Since there is no glue involved in the installation process, the risk of pulling your own lashes out is minimized. I find that people get more wear out of magnetic lashes, too, since there is no glue to damage them — so they can be a more cost effective option.”
How Do Magnetic Lashes Work?
It depends on the type of magnetic lashes you use. Many magnetic lashes, like the Glamnetic Magnetic Lashes, attach via magnetic eyeliner. “For magnetic lashes to work, they must be paired with a Magnetic Liner,” says Ann McFerran, the founder of Glametic. “Magnetic liners contain FDA-approved iron oxides that have magnetic properties. The magnets on the lash band immediately attract the iron oxides and allow the band to attach itself onto the liner on the lash line.”
However, there are also magnetic lashes that don’t require an eyeliner adhesive. As VonSleichter explains, in this case, “two strips of lashes attach to each other using magnets — sandwiching your own in between them.”
How Long Do Magnetic Lashes Last?
“Depending on the frequency of wear, quality and care given to them, they can last several months if taken care of,” notes VonSleichter. “I recommend cleaning them after each use and storing [them] correctly in their original packaging.”
In terms of how long hey last while on your actual lashes, it depends on the product you’re using, the environment and weather (rain and humidity can make a difference) and how well they were applied. McFerran notes that the Glametic PowerGrip Magnets can be worn for up to 10 hours and last for up to 60 wears.
How to Apply Magnetic Lashes (With Magnetic Liner)
Follow the steps from McFerran below to learn how to apply the Glamnetic Magnetic Lashes.
Step 1: Apply Magnetic Liner
“Apply two thin even coats of magnetic eyeliner along the lash line for maximum hold,” she says.
Step 2: Secure Lashes
“Wait 20 seconds for the liner to dry, then secure lashes by making sure magnets make full contact with the liner.”
How to Apply Magnetic Lashes (Without Magnetic Liner)
Step 1: Prep Your Station and Your Skin
“It is essential to have a good-quality magnifying mirror so you see what you’re doing when installing your lashes,” says VonSleichter.” She recommends mirrors from Ilios Lighting, “as they combine magnification with a ring light.” In addition to preparing your beauty station, you’ll want to make sure your eyelids are clean and free of oil. We recommend gently swiping your eyelids and lashes with the Garnier SkinActive Micellar Cleansing Water All-in-1 Cleanser and Makeup Remover.
Step 2: Test the Lashes’ Length and Attach the Magnetic Lashes
Next, VonSleichter recommends testing your falsies’ length — if you need to remove some length, trim from the false lashes’ inner corners. Then, place your lashes. “I find it easier to place the lower lash strip under your lashes first, and then add the top lashes once you are happy with the position of the lower lashes. Looking up during installation allows you to install them as close to your eyelid as possible.”
